Antony Proudman
Iain Patton remembers a good friend of the Trust
Antony came to Winchester when he joined IBM at Hursley, where he had a distinguished career. He also spent time, with his family, on two spells with IBM in the United States. Amongst his achievements was the invention, with others, of ‘read only memory’, an essential part of all computers.
Enthusiastic Francophiles, he and his wife Elizabeth worked hard to perfect their French conversation and found time to visit Burgundy and hone his knowledge of these splendid wines. Antony was very active in the Trust. He worked with Michael Carden on our response to the then-new Planning Policy Guidance, which was an important change in planning. Our answer was praised by the government and even by the then Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott.
Antony was a conscientious member of the Trust's Planning Appraisal Group, where his enthusiasm for architecture was of great assistance to fellow panel members.
