Perhaps we take for granted the wealth of trees which form the background to distant views of the City and provide diversion in the street scene, and forget that they have a limited life-span. The demise of the holm oak in the High Street was a timely reminder, and the Trust welcomed the replanting of this site during the year.

It is reassuring that, as custodians of important trees around the Cathedral, the Dean and Chapter are taking positive action which should inspire other responsible owners to do likewise.
