Design Awards 2000
This scheme was the eighth run by the Trust since 1984. Awards are given for new buildings, rehabilitation, landscape, shop fronts and fascias, and streetscape - within the City of Winchester. The Chairman for this scheme was David Rock PPRlBA, FCSD, who with a selection panel (two Trust members concerned with development control, and two architects) chose the awards.
Awards were given to the Textile Conservation Centre, Winchester School of Art (architecture plb) and to the Slug and Lettuce, 12/13 the Square (Edward Rogers Associates Ltd). The following schemes were Commended: Martial Rose Library Extension, King Alfred's College (Fielden Clegg Bradley Architects); Winchester Cathedral Visitor Centre Phase Two (architecture plb); campus reception building, Winchester School of Art (architecture plb); The Hambledon, 10 The Square (designer David Rose); Denstone House, 78 Christchurch Road (Hauser Greenwood); hanging sign at Warrens, Upper High Street (sculptor Alex Jones); and the Millennium Plaque, St Bede's (Winchester College Community Service and St Bede's Primary School).
The purpose of the Design Awards is to recognise quality in the design of a scheme and its contribution to its context, how it fits its intended purpose and so forth. At the Award Ceremony in November 2000 David Rock concluded: "l am a great admirer of the Trust's work and congratulate it on its achievements, as I do the Award winners and those who have received commendations.”
