Gonk - Trust Annual Report 1967

Our congratulations must go to members of the Winchester Eighteen-plus Group who worked one night to remove the "Gonk" on St. Catherine's Hill. This figure cut in the chalk was alleged to have been the work of Southampton University students, to draw attention to their "rag".

When the immediate effect of such jokes has worn off, they become very depressing as semi-permanent disfigurements of the daily scene.

It is very encouraging that these young people have the civic pride to efface the vulgar and unsightly mess made by outsiders.
