The Re-organisation of Local Government - Trust Annual Report 1974
The year 1974 has been very important in the development of effective preservation. Last year we looked forward to the changes brought about by the re-organisation of local government. That Winchester should have their own officers for planning and conservation, is proving very valuable. The Trust has had an opportunity of working closely with the new department, to build up a relationship which it is hoped will be beneficial by fulfilling the requirements of participation in planning, which is supported by recent legislation.
There are, however formidable problems. Not only are there strong pressures for re-development on many important city sites, but the area covered by the new planning department, is very much larger. The department, therefore, is having to establish their position while assessing a multitude of planning applications. The Trust is also very grateful to members of their sub-committee, set up to examine the planning lists each month, and then holding a meeting to comment on the proposals after a visit to the site. This demands the expenditure of much time and effort, but very worthwhile for all those really concerned about their environment.
