Trees - Trust Annual Report 1981

After the demise of the Holm Oak in the High Street, the Trust asked the County Council to consider replacing it with a deciduous tree, such as a Norway Maple, which would add an element of seasonal change to the street scene. Perhaps the loss of this important tree was the catalyst needed to start the tree survey of Winchester in the Spring. Old age and the pressure for development threaten many of the trees which make such a valuable contribution to the setting of the City. In addition to noting all significant trees, groups of trees and hedges with their present condition, the survey will record spaces where planting is desirable. The results will be made available to the local authorities so that they will be able to take into account the value of the trees when considering development proposals and be aware of places where planting is needed. The time taken to complete the survey will depend upon the amount of help forthcoming from members and others interested in undertaking a share of the work.
