Winchester's Only Gas Lantern - Trust Annual Report 1982

This well known lantern in Great Minster Street had succumbed to the ravages of time and no longer cast its cheerful delicate glow. Discreet enquiries prompted Southern Gas to restore the lantern to full working order, many of the parts having to be specially remade. Known as a Webb's patent gas lantern, it dates from around the 1880's, since when it has been burning by day and night in order to ventilate the sewers through its hollow column. The Trust has expressed its appreciation to the Chairman of Southern Gas for sparing a skilled technician to restore the lantern with such care.
