Winchester's Twinning Links - Trust Annual Report 1983
Following an initiative by the last Mayor, Councillor Bert Austen, and a meeting of representatives of more than 90 local organisations, the Winchester Twinning Association was formed in January, 1983. The Trust has joined the Association and is represented on its management committee. Winchester is twinned with Versailles in France, Giessen in Western Germany and Kerkrade in Holland. Sporting and school links are fairly well established, but contacts needs to be widened to encom¬pass other elements of community interest.
The aims of the Association are to promote and foster friendship and understanding between the peoples of the four Cities, to encourage visits by individuals and groups and to develop the links between young people through successful exchanges. The benefits of membership include a regular Twinning Newsletter, access to detailed information on the twinned Cities, advice on travel options, assistance in establishing overseas contacts and information on forthcoming exchanges. The individual subscription is and membership forms may be obtained from the Winchester Heritage Centre, Tourist Office and Libraries.
