The President's Walks - Trust Annual Report 1984

Although the first rain in weeks coincided with the start of the initial walk on May 10th, about 50 stalwarts met at Water Close and followed Mrs. Carpenter Turner on a tour which included three delightful private gardens in Colebrook Street and the dipping-place up a narrow alley.

Finding the next week's starting point, Black Bridge, proved difficult for some, as the Tourist Office had forgotten where it is! But perseverance paid off and nearly 100 people eventually made their way to it down College Walk and joined the President on a stroll to Wharf Mill and then along the Weirs. At Wolvesey they were treated to a surprise visit to the ruins. A similar sized crowd met at Prior's Gate for the third walk along St. Swithun Street, Symonds Street and Minster Lane, taking in a wealth of fascinating detail on the way.

Due to the high cost of advertising the walks in the press (over £29 this year) we are considering abandoning this method of publicity, relying instead on the monthly 'Events' list published by the Tourist Office and the 'What's On' columns in the Echo and Extra. Members will continue to receive advance information in the Newsletter.
