Measured Drawing Prize for Students - Trust Annual Report 1985
At a recent Trust Council Meeting, Andrew Rutter mentioned the lack of a proper record of buildings that are demolished in the City and the problems of correct restoration without adequate measured drawings. It was immediately recognised by all present that a solution to this problem might be sought by the Trust and would make a practical and worthwhile contribution to both the recording and conservation of our buildings.
Unfortunately, measuring buildings thoroughly and drawing the results accurately is extremely time-consuming and photographs are not an adequate substitute. It was, however, noted that students of architecture often have to produce measured drawings for submission for assessment in their professional exams, and so the idea of a measured drawing prize for architecture students was conceived.
A prize of £100 was agreed and this can be awarded to any student of architecture submitting scale drawings of a building in Winchester he has himself measured. The scheme will be judged by two architect members of the Trust and the City Conservation Officer, and preference will be given to drawings of threatened buildings.
A letter has been sent to the Principals of both the Portsmouth Polytechnic School of Architecture and the Oxford Polytechnic School of Architecture seeking support. We hope that the Schools of Architecture will respond to this offer and, not only will students thereby be encouraged to help the Trust obtain a record of our disappearing City, but will also stand a chance of winning a cash prize in the normal pursuit of their studies.
