Hockley Viaduct - Trust Annual Report 1999

Further to last year's report not much physical work has been undertaken, so sadly the viaduct continues to deteriorate whilst everyone bickers about funding.

Tony Langridge, Chief Estates Officer of Winchester City Council, chaired a meeting of all interested parties at which plans for the footpath and access were discussed and broadly agreed. The only real problem seemed to be horse riders who if thrown might find themselves hurtling into the Itchen Valley as the parapets would not be high enough! An approach by the City to the Heritage Lottery Fund resulted in a negative response partly because the viaduct was not listed (the original application having failed).

Hampshire County Council were contacted for advice but could only suggest an application to the Landfill Tax Office. To try and break the log-jam Dr Edwin Course is considering undertaking a book on the viaduct, but to date no pictures have been located of the viaduct being built in 1895.
