Chippindale Venture - TrustNews Summer 2000

Progress Report on Year 2000 Project We are in the middle of preparing an exercise which is rather more ambitious than our usual schemes.

We decided that as it is the Millennium we should attempt to involve all the schools which have participated to date in both the Chippindale Ventures and Chippindale Workshops in one large exercise.

The proposal

The proposal is to consider designing a museum for both the Christian Religion and for comparative religions. The site chosen is the car park site adjacent to the Wessex Hotel and bounded by the District Council Offices on the North side, Colebrook Street and the Park on the East Side. The choice of site is to a large extent due to the fact that it is close to the Cathedral and close to the core of religious activities during the medieval period of English history.

The brief

A brief is currently being prepared which involves both internal displays as well as external contemplation areas. Each school will be given the brief during the autumn term and the proposal is that teams will work up a feasibility study from which a winner will be selected to go forward to the final. Those teams not selected will then be given the task of selecting a 200 year span of religious history to research for providing examples of the main events of those centuries.

2000 years — 10 x 200
It is hoped that 10 schools
will participate.

As one can see the scheme is ambitious and we have not yet been in a position to approach the schools to see whether they wish to participate. We are hoping to undertake the Venture in November this year but this will be a school decision in order to fit their timetables.

The problem

One problem we know we will have is staffing. If anybody feels they are able to help in any way with this exciting project, our committee would be most grateful to hear from you. Pam Moore is the point of contact and her telephone number is: (023) 80 26 92 28.
