Traffic & Transport - TrustNews December 08

The chairman and several trust council members recently met with Keith Wood and senior council officers. Councillor Wood is the cabinet member with responsibility for Planning and Access.

The discussions covered a range of issues arising from the Trusts comments on the Town Access Plan submitted earlier in the Year. In particular Councillor Wood outlined the plans for repaving Winchester High Street due to start in September 2009. The work will be jointly funded by the City and County Councils and tenders will be sought in the new year for an “early contractor involvement” contract. The paving material will be natural York stone pavoirs and flagstones and the seats, bins, bollards and signs will be bespoke designed for the scheme. Consultation is taking place to modify the traffic regulations to prevent all but emergency and maintenance vehicles from entering the central area of the High St between Upper Brook and St Thomas St. Bollards will be installed to prevent unauthorised access. The cost of the scheme is £2.2m. The design process is ongoing and the Council undertook to continue to consult the Trust on the design as it evolves.

The South of Winchester Park and Ride car park at Bushfield now has all the necessary approvals and work will commence in the spring with an opening date of 2010. Preliminary works are already under way. The construction of the car park is a County Council scheme and the car park and bus service will be managed by the City Council on completion.
