Bookbinding - TrustNews June 09

Tim Wiltshire

What would you do if you inherited a valuable first edition from your favourite aunt? Would you try to sell it? Your children forbid it but point out the obvious - the cover is falling off.

You decide to have it repaired, but where? You envisage a trip to London until a friend tells you to look in Winchester. Where? Tucked away at the back of that splendid bookshop, P and G Wells, in College Street is the man who can help you. A small group of members visited him recently. Tim Wiltshire is a true craftsman. He works with tools which have not changed for centuries. Indeed, some of them date back to the 18th century. Those present learned much of the history and practice of bookbinding and saw some splendid examples of Tim’s craftsmanship.

We were most fortunate. If there is support for another visit - not more than six - please register your interest with Vicky Feldwick. No promises, but we could try for another visit. If that doesn’t happen and you take a book to him for a little TLC, it will be beautifully repaired.
