Winchester Business Improvement District (BID) refuse collection project - TrustNews Dec 12
Commercial waste is not collected free by the Council but has to be arranged and paid for by each business. This has resulted in a very large number of collection companies competing to collect waste and a plethora of different bins for each company and business. Unlike domestic waste, much of this waste has just ended up in landfill. The Trust has long been campaigning to get commercial refuse collection in the city rationalized to reduce the number of bins cluttering up and overflowing on our streets. The Winchester Business Improvement District (BID) recognized our concerns and has worked hard to introduce a common waste collection and recycling scheme for its members in the City. This will save Winchester businesses money, reduce the City’s carbon footprint, reduce the disruption caused by waste collection and improve the general environment by reducing number of bins and unsightly piles of rubbish left out for collection.
BID has now appointed Southern Waste Management (SWM) to implement the new efficient cost-saving scheme for its members. SWM strive to achieve a zero landfill policy and are operating the Refusederived Fuel “Waste to Energy” system whereby recyclable or non-burnable materials are removed and the remaining rubbish is transformed to produce a combustible product to produce electricity. SWM will be providing Winchester with a smaller general waste collection lorry. This will help ease traffic congestion too!
