The Garrison Mews photographed in the 1890s

Members will be aware that the Peugeot garage in Southgate Street has closed and the future of the site is uncertain. This was the location of the Garrison Mews, built in the mid-1860s for John Tubb, a horse-dealer, as livery stables of which the coach-house with hayloft and pigeon-loft survive largely intact. The photograph from the 1890s, reproduced on the front page of this TrustNews, shows the Mews at that time with the chimney of St James' Brewery in the background. In about 1922 Will Short moved his Motor Works here from Parchment Street and the premises remained as a garage for 90 years. The Trust will make every effort to ensure that that this historic building is preserved.
