Trust Members Visit - TrustNews Mar 13
It is hoped to arrange a visit, in the summer months, to the Abbey church of St Michael at Farnborough. This remarkable building was built in 1883-8 for the Empress Eugenie to create a mausoleum for her late husband, Emperor Napoleon III. The reason for this unlikely location is that they were exiled there from France after the fall of the Second Empire in 1870.
The tour will be led by Michael Carden, who has a long professional connection with the Abbey. Lunch will be arranged nearby.
As always, an early indication of interest is sought. There is little purpose in arranging a visit if there is no support. Please indicate your interest to our Secretary.
I am contemplating a visit to Spitalfields, restored by determined local people, a triumph against developers who later cooperated in large scale reconstruction. It would be impossible to visit Spitalfields without including Christchurch, a master-piece by Hawksmoor. It too was nearly lost due to neglect but local interest and determined campaigners brought back its magnificence. Again, expressions of interest, please.
