Hammond's of Winchester

With all of the events and discussions regarding the anniversaries of the World Wars and the recent special Remembrance Services, at work we talking about how Remembrance day has been marked over the years in Winchester. Apparently some thirty or forty years ago Mr Hammond from Hammond's Gunsmiths, based in Jewry Street, would pull a small canon up on to St Giles’ Hill and fire a number of shots - hopefully blanks !

I tried to find a bit more information on the gunsmiths with little success. Any information on Hammond's would be gratefully received especially with regard to the marking of Remembrance Day. I do feel it is so important to document such events, as indeed any information on any of the lost shops and traders of Winchester’s past, before it is forgotten. Please email me any information that may be of interest.
