Kitty Bishop
Kitty Bishop's memories of St Michael's Parish in the March edition of TrustNews made interesting reading, especially as this parish was amalgamated with St Thomas and St Swithun parishes. As choir members, we took it in turns to sing at both churches on alternate Sundays (St Swithun Church was not in use).
l knew Kitty Bishop through this connection. A delightful lady, she was a schoolteacher, possibly at St Michael Infant School in Canon Street. Her father was a window cleaner, and l remember seeing him push his wheelbarrow with the appropriate equipment around the streets of Winchester. By the way, there were six pubs in Canon Street (not three) the others being The Albert(closed 1903), The Rose and Crown (closed 1905) and The Sportsman’s Arms (closed 1911).
Kitty would not have known these as she was not born until 1916!
