Troops of Oliver Cromwell Approaching Winchester - TrustNews April 1985

Members will be delighted to learn that this very important painting of Winchester by George Arnald has now been saved for the City due to the timely intervention of the Trust. In spite of a public appeal and offers of grants, the sum raised was still £2,000 less than the price required. Through the Museums Curator, the Council of the Trust offered a loan of £2,000 to the City, and as a direct result of this, the money was found from another source. The picture is at present on display on the staircase of the Guildhall, and is to be cleaned later this year. Much of its interest lies in the portrayal of the Winchester landscape as it was at the end of the 18th century.
