The City Wall - TrustNews April 1986

Following the recent demolition of garages in Canon Street, a 30 ft. length of the old City Wall was uncovered, standing to a height of about 6 ft. An inspection by the City Archaeologist established that part of the flintwork is of Roman origin, evidenced by the lighter colour of the mortar. Another interesting feature is that stones from the battlements were found in the fallen debris, indicating that this part of the wall probably stood to its full height in the not so distant past.

Unfortunately, the ownership of this wall is obscure, and we understand that an approach to the City Council has not so far produced any results. The owners of the garages site are prepared to carry out repairs if other interested parties contribute.

Winchester has very little remaining evidence of its Roman and Mediaeval fortifications, and it would seem a worthwhile project to preserve this part of the wall which lies approximately half-way between Kings Gate and the site of South Gate. The Trust has offered to contribute £100.
