Obituary - Dr George Swift - TrustNews February 1989
We were saddened to hear of the death, shortly before Christmas, orlon, George Swift. Until he decided to stand down in 1986, George was a member of the Council of the Trust and played a leading part in the establishment and running of the Winchester Heritage Centre. He became Honorary Manager soon after the Centre was opened to the public in 1983 and it was largely due to his enthusiasm and drive that an efficient team of voluntary Stewards was built up, which has played an essential part in its success. George gave a great deal of time to the Heritage Centre and was a tireless promoter of its interests, highly successful at recruiting both volunteers and members, and imbuing them with his own enthusiasm.
He had a distinguished professional career. In addition to his work as a general practitioner in Winchester, he played a leading part in the development of the Royal College of General Practitioners, of which he became Chairman in 1967, and in the organisation of postgraduate training for general practice. He was awarded an OBE in 1971.
George will be very much missed by us all and our sympathy goes out to his family.
