News in Brief - TrustNews February 1991

A new Hampshire County Structure Plan is under consideration by Hampshire County Council. The Trust has been following the plans with close interest and has submitted comments. Whilst in sympathy with the basic objective of reducing the rate of house-building in Hampshire, the Trust has some doubts as to whether the stated aim of restricting provision of new housing to 'meeting local needs only' is feasible.

For some time the Trust has been expressing concern both to the City and in public about the deteriorating condition of the Westgate and the Buttercross. We have been pleased to learn therefore from the City that work is due to start on both monuments very shortly.

In the case of the Westgate this will take the form of a survey following which a somewhat cumbersome process has to be followed involving tenders, Department of Environment and Ancient Monument consent, but we have been assured by the City that every effort will be made to expedite matters.

The Trust has made a donation of £300 towards the restoration of the weathervane at St. John's Church.
