Landscape - The Trust Tree Survey - TrustNews Spring 1996
The tree survey which covers all trees within the Old City Walls was completed with help from members of the Trust in September 1995 and a copy handed to Michael Edwards, Arboricultural Officer to Winchester City Council. He was enthusiastic about having this information which will assist with care of the trees. It will be put onto computer for easy reference and can be updated as necessary.
The survey was divided into four main sections and some areas subdivided and plans enlarged, such as Abbey Gardens, so that trees could be plotted and numbered. The schedule then gives the number on the plan, specie, height, spread and circumference of the trunk at waist height, with comments on condition.
The Cathedral Close had a detailed tree survey undertaken a few years ago (which we were very glad to be able to use) and we updated this where trees had been felled and new trees planted. The Barracks' site also has a recent tree survey, a copy of which is held by Winchester City Council. This is not included in our survey.
In all we covered 1354 trees. If anyone is interested in seeing this tree survey there is a copy kept at the Heritage Centre.
