Barry Joyce and Local Distinctiveness - TrustNews Summer 1996
On 30 May, Barry Joyce of Derbyshire County Council showed The Trust some beautiful slides of typically Derbyshire buildings and details, both domestic and industrial - door frames and windows, roof tiles, stone paving, wooden gutters, shop fronts and so forth. His theme was `Local distinctiveness' the object being not to expect this rich heritage of detail to be copied by architects and builders, but to inspire new details which are sympathetic to the old. Shown here are two photographs taken by Gordon Michell illustrating Barry Joyce's recently published book 'Derbyshire Detail and Character. A celebration of its town and villages' published by Derbyshire County Council priced £12.99.
