Robin Merton, New Chairman - TrustNews Spring 1998
The Trust is very fortunate that Robin Merton has agreed to be Chairman, following the retirement of Antony Skinner. After a career in the army, Robin has recently been Regimental Secretary to the Royal Hussars, now the King's Royal Hussars, in Winchester, which involved being responsible for the regimental museum at Peninsula Barracks. Very much a Winchester man, Robin was born here, where his great grandfather T F Kirby was a Mayor of the city, and he has been a long standing member of the Trust. He is married to Jilly, herself involved in many voluntary organisations in Winchester; they have a son and daughter. We welcome him as Chairman of the Trust and wish him good luck.

Membership, Subscriptions and Donations - TrustNews Spring 1998
We would like to extend a warm welcome to all those who have recently joined the Trust: Mrs Jean Wheeler, Miss Vivien Manfield, Marie and Rod Halls, John Cooley, Mary, Andrew and Laura Dolman, Mr and Mrs Brian Hampson, Steven Costello, Carol Brady, John and Pamela Holland, Mr and Mrs C Oram, Mr A R Parkhurst, Dr and Mrs G Sharman, Cdr J A C and Mrs Moulson, Mrs Judith Martin, Stuart and Pauline Moore, plus the St Swithun Street and Symonds Street Residents' Association and the Winchester Project as Corporate Members.
The Trust has been able to hold subscriptions at the current rate for 5 years but at the Council meeting in June 1997 it was agreed an increase would have to be made in May 1998. The new rates will be:
Single (£8.00)
Family/household (£ 12.00)
Corporate (£15.00)
Existing members aged 65+ on 1st May 1998 may if they wish continue at the current rates. At the same time, a new category of Junior Membership will be introduced for those aged under 21. This will be at £5.00 per annum and we hope may encourage the many enthusiastic children and students who come into contact with the Trust through the Chippindale Venture to continue their interest. A banker's order form is enclosed for all those who pay by that method and will need to amend their subscriptions for 1998/99. Payment by banker's order does give the Trust a saving in bank charges.
Until May 1998, the rates for life membership are £60.00 (single) and £75.00 (family/household). These will also increase -£100.00 (single) and £120.00 (family/household) - from that date.
An application form is enclosed and as an introductory offer we will be happy to welcome new members now at the existing rates which will take them through to May 1999. Existing members too may also like to think of becoming life members whilst the current cheaper rates apply.
With the exception of Monday, which seems to be the popular day in 1998, the large and small meeting rooms at the Heritage Centre continue to be available for hire. We can also arrange to provide equipment (slide or overhead projector, display boards etc). Please contact the Trust office for details of availability and hourly rate (Winchester 851664).
