John Brimfield died on the 17th April 1998, at the age of 56.
John had been an active and good supporter of the Winchester Heritage Centre and the archive group. He had himself mounted an exhibition of a selection from his fine and extensive collection of local postcards, and had also created a large display of the work of the Cathedral "Holy Dusters".
John became aware that local photographer E.A. (Bob) Sollars was seeking to place his forty-year collection of many thousands of negatives into safe keeping, and some two thousand of these are now with the Winchester Preservation Trust.
From these John selected a number of negatives of local interest and published them in the Archive Photographs Series under the title "Winchester from the Sollars Collection", published by the Chalford Publishing Company of Stroud, Gloucestershire. John gave valuable assistance to a second book by E.A. (Bob) Sollars, using negatives from a wider selection. Both books are on the shelves of local book shops.
Under the auspices of the Winchester Preservation Trust John had also published, from a tape recording, "Memoirs of a Working Man" by Percy Crockford.
May John and his widow Jennifer find peace after much pain.
