God Begot - Trust Annual Report 1969

There is a possibility that this long established hotel may disappear and become showrooms and workshops for the jewellery business below. Historically this is one of the most interesting sites in Winchester, but one which with the neighbouring property No. 102, has been more mauled than many others in attempts to modernise. The half timbered frontage is a comparatively recent addition of 1908, an independent structure quite unlike the original, which had already been spoiled by earlier changes. The genuine exterior can be seen in the Royal Oak Passage which used to be matched by the other side of St. Peter's Street until 1961. The interior has much of the original timber and this proved very attractive to American visitors and to local residents who visited the dining room. It is understood that the public will still have access to see some of the upper floors, but there are many who regret that the expiry of the lease may cause the loss of this hotel of world-wide renown.

Quite apart from the ultimate use of the building, the Trust is glad to learn that extensive restoration is to take place.
