Important Unlisted Buildings - Trust Annual Report 1980

The DoE's criteria for statutory listing vary in accordance with the date of construction. Whilst all pre - 1700 buildings which survive in anything like their original condition qualify for listing, those built after 1840 have to be of definite quality and character, and selection is designed to include the principal works of major architects.

A number of Winchester's Victorian and Edwardian buildings which do not qualify at present may do so in the future. In any event the Trust believes that their local importance should be established as soon as possible and has started a file on significant unlisted buildings. It is intended that this project should lead to the publication of an influential and interesting catalogue.
