St. John's Street Re-visited - Trust Annual Report 1980
In the St. John's Street Report of 1975, the Trust drew attention to the special qualities of the area and many of our conclusions also appeared in the City's own development brief. Some of the houses south of Tudor House have since been restored but, sadly, the group of houses to the north are scheduled under the Town Plan for redevelopment in 1981 and continue to decline, while there are no signs of the proposed infilling of open sites created by earlier demolition.
St. John's Street may not be quite another Gold Hill, Shaftesbury, but its buildings have a dramatic vitality of their own and their contribution to Winchester's street scenery is irreplaceable. The Trust intends to reappraise the area and hopes that the City will realise its potential and encourage restoration and infilling by whatever means are available.
