The policy of the Trust is not to resist change - Trust Annual Report 1982
The policy of the Trust is not to resist change in the gradual development of Winchester, because its attraction lies in the scale of time as well as space, but we do place a special value on those things which can never be repeated. We are reluctant to accept that progress need result in the neglect and decline of individual buildings like St. John's Church when they are no longer needed, or in the destruction of narrow streets because they impede the movement of lorries, or even in the loss of Victorian gravestones because of the rising cost of maintenance. We believe the solution often lies in lateral thinking; Chesil Church is now a theatre, for example, and our thoughts about other problems are referred to in the following pages.
