Planning matters remain one of our major preoccupations, and groups try to study all controversial applications within the city area, submitting comments to the Authority where appropriate. We also endeavour to make a contribution to forward planning because we share the Planners' view that positive but flexible forward planning is as important as everyday control, which inevitably tends to be negative. Once upon a time buildings just happened, and because this resulted in attractive cities some people think planning is unnecessary, even harmful. They forget how few people lived in England in those days and how strict a control was exercised by land tenure, available technology and the limited choice of materials.
