The Town and Country Carnival - Trust Annual Report 1982

The interests of the Preservation Trust are often thought of in terms of buildings alone, but we are also concerned with the pattern of life stretching back to the great cathedral holy days and mediaeval fairs with their accompanying festivities. A year ago the Winchester Carnival was in danger of extinction but, thanks to the initiative and energy of the Mayor, Ian Bidgood, all local societies were invited to participate in the organisation and running of the Carnival. The Trust contributed by sending a representative who became the secretary of the main committee, and when an appeal for trophies went out we also donated a silver rose bowl for the float competition. The object of the Carnival is to give enjoyment, to advertise Winchester and to contribute to the Mayor's charities. This year our new Mayor, Bert Austen, has taken great personal interest in the Carnival Committee's deliberations, and the Trust hopes you will again enjoy the floats, festivities and fireworks on Saturday, I Ith September and remember the Trust's contribution to Winchester life.
