40-49 St. John's Street - Trust Annual Report 1983
The Trust is delighted to report that the rehabilitation of these ten Victorian houses is now complete. This, together with surrounding work carried out by the City Council has given a new lease of life to this very old street, once the important main route out of Winchester to Guildford and London.
The Trust is most grateful to the Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust for taking the main financial burden and organising much of the building work. The Trust has, however, played an important role by persuading the City Council to grant the licence to repair, and also by choosing Keith Walker, ARIBA, as architect. This was a very happy appointment, as Keith took a personal as well as a professional interest in the project.
All those members who recently inspected these houses have appreciated the importance of this operation, resulting in a part of old Winchester being preserved which would otherwise have been lost. Particularly interesting is No. 40 St. John's Street where the mediaeval cellar and the timber framed north wall have been carefully restored.
All the houses have been sold, and most are now occupied, six by nominees of the City Council and the remainder by purchasers in the open market.
