Kingsgate Lamp

Kingsgate Brightened - Trust Annual Report 1983

After the 1981 AGM a collection was taken for a "President's Project". £50.25 was raised, and the Presi¬dent approved a suggestion that it be used to renovate the lamp under Kingsgate Arch. This seemed an appropriate project, for the lamp had been installed as part of Wilfrid Carpenter Turner's design for refurbishment of the arch some twenty years earlier. Furthermore, it was in poor condition due to lack of maintenance, and no longer worked. The job was entrusted to a Winchester craftsman blacksmith, Nicholas Coppin, who completed it this year. The improvement — best seen after dark — is remarkable.
