Plaques - Trust Annual Report 1983
The 1981 Report carried an item on Winchester's pioneer motorist, General H. P. Montgomery, who in 1897 was the first person in this country not connected with the motor industry to purchase an English-built motor car, a Coventry-built Daimler. The plaque generously donated by Jaguar Daimler Cars has arrived, and the Trust is now seeking planning permission for its installation at Anglo City House (formerly Meadow House), Southgate Street.
Official plaques cover most major sites, and the Trust is continuing to investigate possible sponsorship for plaques in less well known places, such as the home of the historian John Lingard (1771-1851) born in St. Thomas Street, and Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who 'visited' Winchester to see Miss Hunter at the Black Swan Hotel in the novel "Copper Beeches".
