Lorries - Trust Annual Report 1983
Earlier this year Mr. David Marklew, the City's Chief Engineer, and Mr. Tony Wilson of the County Surveyor's Department met members of the Trust's Town Planning Committee to discuss the problems of lorries in Winchester. Mr. Marklew said that he was keeping an open mind on the subject until a survey of lorry movements had been completed, and that no decisions would be taken until then.
The survey has now taken place, and a report is expected shortly. It is anticipated that lorries will be divided into the following categories:
- Delivery vehicles with a legitimate reason to be in Winchester.
- Vehicles using the City as a short cut, or to avoid congestion on the By-pass.
- Vehicles going to and from the lorry park in Worthy Lane.
It is categories (1) and (2) that cause us most concern, and it will be interesting to see the numbers involved. To an everyday observer there seem to be many heavy goods vehicles on the streets of Winchester which should not be there.
It is to be hoped that the report will recommend procedures for barring these extraneous lorries and for countering the damaging effects of the very heavy lorries legitimately seeking access.
