Urban Studies Committee - Trust Annual Report 1986
The title of this Commitee is a legacy of the original intention, several years ago, to establish in Winchester an Urban Studies Centre linked with the national network of such Centres.
There are now six activities, mainly concerned with Winchester streets and buildings.
Lunch time talks at the Heritage Centre on the 2nd Tuesday in September, October and November - see Summer Newsletter.
Educational activities for children following the successful Brooks Trail in 1986.
Lectures and visits to new buildings. The Trust is associated with Winchester City Council's "Time for Design" Initiative. The proposed theme for the current session is Housing, Design, Furnishing and Landscaping.
Meetings related to exhibitions on the upper floor of the Heritage Centre.
The present exhibition on the High Street, with photographs of old and new buildings will be displayed for two months. During October, times, day and evening, have been allocated for informal "do you remember?" meetings when well known local residents will start the gossip flowing.
Members are urged to visit the Centre soon to add their names to the listed dates as accommodation is limited to 20. Sessions for members and friends will be held on Friday 10th October at 6.30 p.m., Friday 17th October at 10.30 a.m. and Friday 24th October at 2.30 p.m.
Publication of booklets on Winchester streets. The fourth is likely to be St. Thomas, Symonds and Little Minster Streets. Any historic details from members will be welcomed.
A slide transparency collection is to be established, mainly of Winchester buildings and events. Initially an indexed file, and description, will be for one thousand slides, providing a useful visual reference to be available on loan. Offers have already been received and the Trust would welcome any spare slides which members care to donate.
