Lectures, Walks and Visits - Trust Annual Report 1987

These continue to be an important side of the Trust's activities and members have been offered a varied diet, though the emphasis continues to be on Winchester and Hampshire.

Two fascinating evening lectures at St. Lawrence Parish Room were given by Dr. Sylvia Landsberg on Mediaeval and Tudor Gardens and by Ashley Barker on Alternative Uses for Redundant Churches. A third on H.M. Naval Base, Portsmouth, by Dr. Ray Riley, had to be cancelled due to severe weather. This, however, will now take place in November, and certainly everyone who took part in the visit to the Royal Naval Base in April will wish to attend.

This visit was a memorable one as members were given a conducted tour of historic buildings in the Naval Base not normally available to the public. A coach trip to Sherborne at the invitation of the Sherborne Society who visited us in 1986, was also a success, although, unfortunately, the day was both wet and cold.

Closer to home, we have had a guided "walkabout" from The Broadway to the Cathedral, looking at some "Hidden Spaces" on the way, as well as a very pleasant evening in which we visited both Queen Eleanor's Garden with Dr. Sylvia Landsberg and the Great Hall with Michael Morris.

For the second year in succession we were able to tour Winchester College, conducted this time by Colin Badcock. The tour of the roofs, tower and stair turrets of Winchester Cathedral led by Mrs. Corinne Bennett, Architect to the Dean and Chapter, has become an annual event and any member who has been privileged to join it (it is limited to 12 people only) would consider it worth joining the Preservation Trust for this reason alone.
