Chippindale Venture and Workshop - Trust Annual Report 1996

A one day workshop for Westgate School was organised in June for 183 children of the age range 13 to 14. A brief was prepared by the Chippindale Committee for the bus station site off The Broadway, out of which a number of schemes evolved from sports centres, to mixed use complexes based around cinemas and cultural centres.

Fifteen town planners, landscape architects and architects provided team leaders and backup for the thirty teams of six. The occasion was also attended by the Mayor of Winchester and some councillors.

At the debriefing session after the occasion, although all concerned felt the day had been a success, it was also considered that the subject matter was perhaps too complex for the children to obtain full benefit from the proceedings. Nevertheless, it was still as always surprising to see a group of young people accept the brief and grasp the essentials of such a difficult site so quickly.

The next exercise is being undertaken with Harestock Junior School. This is a venture scheme which takes place over a number of weeks. The brief is for a Performing Arts Centre within the school grounds. For this scheme there will be sixty children and the process starts during the early part of 1997.

As always, the Chippindale Venture and Workshop Committee wish to thank all those who participate in providing their expertise so willingly. Without these professionals and in many cases the firms and organisations who allow them to participate and support the Chippindale exercises, the whole education programme just would not work. It is always good to see so much enthusiasm from the team leaders. Without exception, the programmes provide inspiration and encouragement, not just to the students but also to all those who participate.

There are three new members of the Chippindale Committee we would like to welcome John Hearne of the Winchester City Planning Department, Debbie Kerr, a retired head teacher and Roisin Mirfin of the Business Education Partnership. We look forward working with them.
