Peninsula Barracks - Trust Annual Report 1996

The changes taking place on both the Upper Barracks and the St James' Lane end of the Lower Barracks are now very visible.

The Trust has continued to study the detailed landscaping plans as soon as they are produced, and to make comments jointly with the Hampshire Gardens Trust. A procedure has now been established whereby the two Trusts hold regular discussions with the City Council's Landscape Architect. We must hope that our comments are passed on to the developer's landscape architect for consideration, and implementation if agreed.

The other unfinished business is the vexed question of a proper brief for the Black Tower site immediately inside the Romsey Road entrance, and bound by Short Block, the Great Hall and the County Council offices, and the Mons Block. The Trust's long-standing request for a design brief for the area has now been taken up, and we most sincerely hope that this course of action will result in a solution that will enhance this most important front-door to the site. Time is now getting short, as the developer is pressing for a quick decision.

We are shortly expecting that a start will be made on the landscaping of the Upper Barracks Parade Ground, with its large pond, the two long, narrow waterways (named "rills"), and the extensive planting - it will be interesting to watch its progress.
