Iron Railings

A free self-guided trail leaflet on Winchester's decorative ironwork has been launched jointly by Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council at a guided walk around Winchester in June. The leaflet takes one around the centre of Winchester, pointing out the rich variety of historic and modem cast and wrought ironwork. It is available free, from the "Cast in Iron exhibition, at the Historic Resources Centre, which is at the headquarters of the Winchester Museums Service in Hyde Street until 28th September.

The ironwork trail leaflet is an important aspect of the 'Cast in Iron' exhibition, encouraging visitors to go and explore the ironwork of Winchester for themselves, with a heightened awareness of where they are to look, what they are looking at and how important the role of decorative iron work is in the overall look of a building or urban landscape. Another integral aspect of the 'Cast in Iron" exhibition is another free leaflet on the care and repair of iron railings (right) which is also available at the Historic Resources Centre.

The local community has also contributed to the exhibition by lending and donating items of decorative ironwork and photographs of examples of railings taken down for the war effort.
