Winchester Heritage Centre - TrustNews August 1988
A meeting took place recently between the Trust and representatives of the City Amenities Committee. We believe that one result will be a greater appreciation on the part of Councillors of the Centre's role, and a fuller understanding of its locational and other problems.
The permission of the City Council (as owner of the building) has been sought for one room to be let to the Chamber of Commerce as an office for its Secretary. A decision is expected shortly: a favourable one would help to offset some of the running costs which are presently being borne solely by the Trust.
Casual visitor numbers continue to disappoint, and the re-siting of the hoardings around the Brooks site will make the Centre even harder for tourists to find and reach than it was before. On the other hand, group visits are running at an encouraging level, and great credit is due to Alan Cooke and Ray Eaglen for promoting and organising these.
The Centre's Display Sub-committee has been reconstituted under the Chairmanship of Mrs. Rosemary Smith. it aims to stage a series of short-term displays in the upstairs committee room, mainly during the period October to March inclusive. Anyone who would like to join this group or who knows of a ready-made exhibition which might be suitable should contact Rosemary on Winchester 840596 or write to her c/o the Heritage Centre.
The Management Committee is keen to encourage more activities in the Centre, and one idea is the establishment of a WPT Local History Section. Interested members are invited to contact the Heritage Centre or any Officer of the Trust.
