In the left foreground is the former St. John's National School for Girls and Infants designed by the Winchester architect John Colson. When the school was completed in 1857 it was described as "this noble school and teacher's residence among the most ornamental buildings recently erected in the City". Sadly, today the building is badly in need of repair and redecoration. Its rescue would bring to an architecturally delightful conclusion the once despaired-of restoration of this historic street and add a very charming element to the townscape of the City.
