Bargeboards of Winchester - TrustNews Summer 1994
Heritage Centres and Councils
After Elizabethen times ornamental bargeboards became fashionable again with the development of the romantic movement and of the Cottage Ornee in the early nineteenth century, and for a time they became an opportunity for the Victorian craftsman and builders to demonstrate their skill with ornate decorative coverings of the joint between the gable end and the roofing. These have been a special architectural feature in Winchester. Nick McPherson has sketched some of the more obvious ones in the City. Can readers guess where they are? (answers). If anyone knows of other good examples in Winchester please let the Editor know and they could be published in a future issue.
