Butterfly Conservation at Magdalen Hill Down - TrustNews Spring 1996

Magdalen Hill Down, dominated by four Bronze Age burrows and site of Winchester's mediaeval fair, is an important part of the City's history and downland setting. Part of it is a nature reserve and delightful public open space run by Butterfly Conservation.

Butterfly Conservation have embarked on a campaign to raise £100,000 in order to extend the reserve and preserve the Down for future generations. After searching assessments, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Hampshire County Council and WWF UK have awarded generous grants, but the vital £100,000 goal has not yet been reached.

On the strength of the funds so far pledged, Butterfly Conservation have cast their bread on the waters and completed the acquisition of the additional 32 acres. But more money is needed to meet the heavy cost of restoring the land to traditional sheep-grazed, flowery sward. With this newsletter you will fund Butterfly Conservation's Appeal leaflet. I know you will give generously.
