Winchester and its Setting

Winchester viewed from the outside

The city is sited in the valley of the River Itchen. From the valley the chalk downland rises gently to the west and more dramatically to the east. The City is surrounded on all sides by countryside, and the interaction of town and country is evident in all directions. Starting from the south and moving clockwise around the outside of the City, the setting is divided into twelve sections, and is described in terms of significance, existing protection and vulnerability.
