St.Maurice's Church Tower - Trust Annual Report 1970
It is fortunate that this tower was saved when the Victorian church was demolished to make room for an extension to Sherriff & Ward. Some old rendering has been chipped away, revealing an interesting texture of mixed materials. The department store required a fire escape and this has been hidden within the old tower, and it is interesting to reflect that it will thus continue to provide an escape from hellfire.
The vista provided by the glimpse of trees through the archway from the High Street is one of those small imaginative gestures which makes the city interesting, and can never, it seems, be provided so well in a new town.
A few of the memorials removed from the old church have now been re-laid in the passage way and the original weather vane is to be put back again.
