The President's Walks - Trust Annual Report 1980

The freshness and humour of Mrs. Carpenter-Turner's approach and her phenomenal knowledge of Winchester's architecture and history are ingredients for an ever popular recipe. Each of the three walks in this year's series was attended by 80 or more enthusiasts, including a number of tourists.

Why is Oram's Arbour so named? Who built the houses in Dome Alley and at what cost? Why do windows in the Blue Boar have no glazing bars? The President answered these questions and many more.

The highlight came when she led a large party into the delightful garden at the rear of 12 Chesil Street, by kind permission of the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Sanders. It provided a vantage point from which visitors could see that the late 18th century front conceals a house of far greater age.
